Matt Damon is one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors since he and Ben Affleck appeared in Good Will Hunting in 1997. He’s been a genius, a thief, a rescued paratrooper in World War II, a serial killer, and a NASA Astronaut. Since this is movie awards season, this would be a great time to translate his movie roles into wine knowledge. If he were a glass of wine, Matt Damon would be one of the most impressive, expensive, and tasty red wines in the world: Chateau Petrus.
What is Chateau Petrus?
Chateau Petrus is a Merlot-dominated Bordeaux blend (along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc). This wine ages very well with a big, bold cherry and blackberry fruit on the nose with a rich mouth-feel, cedar edge, and chewy-tannic finish. This is found in an area called Pomerol, which is in the Right-Bank of Bordeaux. While most of the prestigious wines are located in the Left-Bank with its 51 greatest wines labeled as “growths”, Chateau Petrus stands only as the very best and one of the most expensive wines in the world!
It costs like $900 billion to save Matt Damon in The Martian
Okay, so it’s expensive to save Chateau Petrus that I don’t currently know a bottle from any vintage that cost less than $7,000. In the movie, The Martian, Mark Whatney (Matt Damon) was struck by debris in a dust storm while the rest of the Astronauts left him in Mars. While he tried to stay alive and try to communicate with anyone on Earth, NASA found out and conducted a rescue mission JUST FOR HIM!

The Wine is Worth Finding for
Remember that movie, Saving Private Ryan, where the entire movie centers around retrieving James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon’s character) away from the battlefield during World War II. Chateau Petrus is a wine today that is mostly sold many years in advance while very few bottles enter an auction to go to the highest bidder.

To Learn More about Chateau Petrus and Alternatives
I have only tried Chateau Petrus once when a guest brought it in the restaurant. This wine wins so many awards and held in such prestige. In the movie, “The Martian”, this was the best performance that I have ever seen from him. Here is the link to other Chateau Petrus vintages!
Let’s be honest, a lot of us will never want to pay so much for a bottle of wine. Here’s an option that is similar to Chateau Petrus called Chateau Lafleur-Gazin 2011, which is much, much, much cheaper to purchase!
