  • Whoooaaaaa! This babys vintage is correct from 1986 This is
7 months ago by mariolunasomm Whoooaaaaa! This baby’s vintage is correct from 1986. This is Marqués de Murrieta Castilla Ygay Viura. 252 months aged in American oak, another 67 months aged in ceramic tanks, and then rested for another 3 years minimum to achieve the flavor profile that they want. There’s a ton of dill, Meyer lemon, and grilled pear on the nose and finishes very bright (even after 30 years), full-bodied, and a finish that lasts over two minutes long. So how did I sell it? My guest told me they had an specific amount that wanted to spend and they wanted to go
  • 273000 Thats how much wine sales that we have brought
7 months ago by mariolunasomm $273,000: That’s how much wine sales that we have brought in just from  @bodegasontanon  since the end of 2015. For my wine program, this is THE most important wine portfolio at Jaleo Las Vegas. We are lucky to represent their craft with wines like the Clarete Rosado, Vetiver Viura, the 2005 Reserva and Gran Reserva, Mitologica, and the fun sweet, dessert Marco Fabio. Cheers!

From Budding Engineer to Passionate Oenophile

This was the quote which was articulated to Mario Luna by Eddie Osterland, the first American Master Sommelier, back in 2007. That night, Mario witnessed one of Eddie’s captivating wine education tastings called “Power Entertainment.“ It was this event that galvanized Mario’s ongoing journey towards becoming a Master Sommelier himself.

Mario Luna attended ITT Technical Institute and Purdue University in Indianapolis, Indiana and graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Electrical Engineering in 2004. In May 2011, Mario passed the Level 1 Introductory Course & Exam administered by the prestigious Court of Master Sommeliers; a mere four months later he became a Certified Sommelier through the same institution. He is currently preparing for the Advanced Level Exam which will bring him one step closer to his goal of achieving the coveted Master Sommelier position, the highest position a Sommelier can obtain.

“You can’t be the best at what you do unless you can provide the service to better everyone else.” – Eddie Osterland

Mario Luna: The Start of the Everyday Sommelier

Spurred on by the quote above, Mario Luna holds himself perpetually to a higher standard of serving others. His passion for educating industry professionals and casual wine lovers alike about the intricacies of wine led him to start his own video blog and wine education company in 2013. Unlike other wine sites and books that emphasize quantity of knowledge over the actual usability of the wine information people are learning, Mario believes that wine education a) shouldn’t be so difficult, and b) should be relatable. In fact, relatability is what Mario’s method is all about.

Wine Education for Everyday Life

When Mario set out to become a wine expert, he found that he learned the concepts faster and retained them better when he drew parallels between things he already knew and understood, like the food and drinks he grew up with, and the ideas he was just becoming familiar with, like wine faults and terroir. With his wine courses, eBooks, podcasts, and other multimedia offerings, he is now using that same easy-to-grasp methodology to help people all over the world learn more about wine in a way that make sense for them and for their everyday lives.

Mario currently lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, and works on the famous Las Vegas Strip. He also frequently conducts tastings in private homes, for business functions, and as part of corporate team-building exercises. In addition to his ever-increasing library of online wine education courses, he also tutors budding sommeliers in both one-on-one and group settings.
